Procol Harum in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK

Booking information and other arrangements

Very regrettably, this gig is cancelled: read statement here

The gig was to have taken place on Friday 24 May 2002, and tickets are GBP 19–50.

The Opera House, Westgate Road, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE1 4AG ; FAX 0191 261 1735

Newcastle is effectively the capital of England's north-east and the city is amply served with air, sea, road and rail connections: see here for directions. The Opera house seats 1,100+ in a fine wood-built Victorian auditorium: more history here.

The current Beatles special-issue of Mojo chronicles the years 1965-1968, or so, day by day. The entry for 24 May, 1967, says "The Beatles go and see Procol Harum at The Speakeasy." 35 years, to the day, before this Newcastle concert, then! (thanks, Jonas)

Hotel Facilities
On behalf of Procol Harum fans world-wide, a discounted room and breakfast rate facility has been negotiated with the Holiday Inn in Newcastle upon Tyne, at:

£80 inc tax for a room for 2 occupants, including breakfast

Anyone wishing to take advantage of this special rate must quote the reference "Robert Barnes/ Procol Harum". This special price (25% off normal rate) is specifically for the Friday night (concert night). Anyone booking must settle their own accounts, and don’t forget to tell them whether you want a double bed or twin beds!

Booking can be made direct by telephone on (UK dialling) 08704 009058, or through www.holiday-inn.com but remember to quote reference as above to secure the discounted rate. I also have a contact person Amanda Hamilton at the Inn.

An initial block of 40 rooms has been allocated until 10 May, at which time they will be sold to the general public if not taken up – so BOOK NOW to avoid disappointment! A (very) late bar is a regular feature of the Holiday Inn on a Friday night. The Holiday Inn is a 10 minute slow stagger from the Opera House.

If the volume of room bookings is high, I shall set about opening a facility with another city centre hotel of similar standing – which may of course cost more.

There is an alternative for those who do not feel inclined to pay the above rate. Try the Travel Inn City Centre, which is on the Quayside in Newcastle at £49.95 inc tax for a double room, BUT no breakfast within this price and no late bar! Book on (UK dialling) 0191 232 6533 or through www.travelinn.co.uk. This hotel is a 15 minute slow stagger from the concert venue. There is NO ARRANGEMENT with the Travel Inn, you just book like anybody else.
