PH at Verona, Italy : 18 June 2004

Field-report from Stefano Ciccioriccio

First impressions from the first Procol gig of 2004, and the first with the present line-up:

A short set played in an historical Roman place (Teatro Romano): good attendance (some 1,500 people).

Procol Harum started playing, as the major attraction of the first day of Verona Beat, only at the end of the evening around 11.40 and were, therefore, obliged to restrict to some 70 minutes their performance.

Highlights for the evening: New Underture, mostly based on Repent Walpurgis, as an introduction to Shine on Brightly where, as usual when Procol Harum plays in Italy, Gary sang some verses from the Italian version Il Tuo Diamante.

A new song was played. At the end of the concert Gary told me that this one is under rehearsal and the actual title is Victims of a Fury.

Usual great guitar from Geoff especially on Simple Sister. The absence of Repent Walpurgis, The Signature and other organ-based songs was noted and was probably due to Josh Phillips's need to have some more sessions with the band. Let's see what will happen in Campione tomorrow.

At the end, as usual, a very professional concert but, for many reasons, not one of the best ever played.
