Procol Harum • Balladen und Powerrhythmen

Susanne Müller (text and picture) in Badische Zeitung • 9 August 2010

BAD KROZINGEN.

BAD KROZINGEN. The Americans call him the “Inventor of Bach’n’Roll”: at the end of the 60s, Procol Harum frontman Gary Brooker was the first to create a unique combination of classical elements and rock music. His Open Air concert in the Bad Krozingen Kurpark was also preceded by advance laurels from the media. And the fans — Rolf Rubsamen, head of the KBG, put the number at around 1,400 — experienced a captivating finale to the Open Air concerts on Friday.

First up came Park & Ride, which is not an instruction from the park security, but the opening act from Baden-Baden. While front-woman Corinna’s party sound got the audience in the mood, Procol Harum leader Gary Brooker made his mark for posterity with a hand-print in the Bad Krozingen Walk of Fame.

In Bad Krozingen Procol Harum frontman Gary Brooker's keyboard provides the park with a rousing last concert of the Open Air seasonEbenso gut gelaunt scherzte der 65-jährige Rockveteran anschließend zwischen den Songs mit dem Publikum.

The 65-year-old rock veteran was in a similarly good mood, joking with the audience between songs. “Bad what?” he shouted into the microphone darkly. “Krozingen” was the collective reply. “Hmm, do you play Rugby in Germany?” he mumbled before Wall Street Blues. “Oh, you can understand me, I’ll do it in English,” he concluded humorously, but shortly afterwards added a top-quality “Dankeschön”, when the fans, who got into the swing of things right from the first number, repeatedly broke out in enthusiastic celebration.

The old rocker also defined the target audience spot on: “Anyone here who is 50, or 60?” The response, of course, hardly came as a surprise.

Trotz der grauen Stoppeln unterm Filzhut hat Brookers Stimme in 40 Bühnenjahren nichts an Intensität verloren. Präzisionsarbeit prägte überdies das Zusammenspiel der Truppe mit Bassist Mathew Pegg, Organist Josh Phillips, Drummer Geoffrey Dunn und Gitarrist Geoff Whitehorn, der ebenso wie Schlagzeuger Dunn bei Manfred Mann’s Earthband musikalisch sozialisiert wurde.

Despite the grey stubble beneath the felt hat, Brooker’s voice has lost none of its intensity in forty years on stage. The ensemble playing of the group was characterised by precision, with Mathew Pegg on bass, Josh Phillips on organ, drummer Geoffrey Dunn and guitarist Geoff Whitehorn, who, like percussionist Dunn [sic], grew up muscially in Manfred Mann’s Earthband.

Whitehorn’s explosive solos also offered proof that his guitar riffs can rightly be mentioned in the same breath as those of Jimi Hendrix. The evening’s repertoire varied harmonically between rocking power rhythms and a contemplative sound. Uniquely beautiful, as always, were the classical facets shimmering in the catchy compositions. All in all, a gripping mixture from forty years of music history, from touching Love & Peace versions to the powerful Conquistador from the 70s.

The only thing missing from Open Air in the Park, unfortunately, was a foretaste of the new album due in the autumn [sic]. But the encore more than compensated the audience for this, with the keenly-anticipated chart ballad A Whiter Shade of Pale, to which some danced, while others surrendered ecstatically, swaying with their sparklers.

Translated into English by Peter Christian – thanks!
