Procol Harum at the Hollywood Bowl, 1973

from Mick Grabham's collection

This smiling photograph of a banjo-playing Gary Brooker would surprise many people who were only casually acquainted with the band and who drew their image of Procol Harum from the endlessly-recycled 1967 pseudo-psychedelic images that the press keep on file.
The original of this picture is blurred, but the haloing makes this a particularly affecting portrait of Keith Reid, who is rarely depicted in action. But what is happening here? One guesses Glimpses of Nirvana ... but was that played at the Hollywood Bowl? It doesn't survive on any of the known recordings.

Alan Cartwright in characteristic stance at his bass, though not in characteristic attire!
Few would disagree that Mick Grabham had a fantastic night at the Hollywood Bowl: the well-known recording shows him on superb form ... indeed the smiling faces in all these photographs suggest that the band were well-aware how brilliantly it was all going.

We published this picture here a while back: let's hope nobody thinks an excuse is needed to show it again.
Another shot of Barrie Wilson in action at this concert may be seen here: here he is jacketless and more deeply absorbed in his playing.

'Abdul the Butcher', as he was introduced to the audience that night. The orchestra (or choir?) don't seem to be in concert dress, so it may be that this is a rehearsal shot.
Alan peeps round the curtain, Mick and Gary smile hugely. The others in the picture might well be conductor and leader, waiting to go out and take a bow?

All photographs by Roberta Holyoak of Sherman Oaks, California: kindly sent to 'Beyond the Pale' by Mick Grabham: thanks, Mick!
