Whiter Shade of Pale gets a different sort of hearing

The Guardian, November 2006

The 1960s song A Whiter Shade Of Pale by Procol Harum is at the centre of a royalties dispute between the group's singer and its organist. The song, a number one hit in 1967 which regularly features in greatest songs of all time polls, has always been credited to frontman Gary Brooker, now 61, and lyricist Keith Reid. In May last year organist Matthew Fisher, 60, said that he was taking Brooker to court, claiming he wrote the song's distinctive organ melody line. The matter is due to be heard at the high court in London on Monday, set down for a five-day trial.
