Barrie J Wilson

A fan offers his musical tribute

'Beyond the Pale' was founded in 1997 on 8 October, and today is the eighth time that we have used that special date to commemorate the work of Procol Harum's magical drummer, Barrie Wilson. It's the first time, however, that we've been able to celebrate it with a purpose-written song: click here to listen to Singing the Blues, which is a tribute song from drummer Tim Gagnon in the USA:

Tim writes, 'Every time I hear it I think how I could have done better. Soften the lyrics a bit. But then again its bluntness stays true to the grieving emotion at hand.  BJ was an extremely gentle humble person and I need another song to express that. Even then it would not be enough.'

SINGING THE BLUES (Tim Gagnon)

Here I am, trying to say goodbye
The crowds died down, but not yet I
So one more time I salute your flag
Still I can’t help thinking it’s a drag

Cause I’m standing here, all alone
And no one else really knows
That of all the people I ever knew
There was no one in this world just like you
And all that this knowledge can do
Is to show me that all along

You were singing the blues, paying the dues
Singing the ... bringing the ... singing the blues

I’m thinking about the parts we played
And how you have to take some blame
For letting the good things slip away
Still that won’t help to ease the pain
And the only truth you have left me
Is when you were singing your songs
