The Dingoes' 2010 album, Tracks

Chris Copping on Hammond organ

Australian band The Dingoes are often credited with being the first Australian band to succeed in transplanting American-influenced blues and country music into an Antipodean context, with songs and playing of international quality.

In August 2009 – many years after disbanding – The Dingoes were instated into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame, to the great delight of peers and fans alike. John Bois, Broderick Smith, Chris Stockley and Kerryn Tolhurst gathered on stage for the first time in thirty years to accept the accolade (also on behalf of their late drummer, John Lee).

Creative juices flowed afresh and the four convened at Tolhurst’s studio in Arizona early in 2010 for exploratory sessions; the result is a brand new Dingoes CD entitled Tracks and featuring ten new songs, released in Australia on the Liberation label. It went straight into the relevant Australian chart at No 14.

The band travelled the tracks of Australia, playing old and new numbers, reinforced by Chris Copping (keyboards), Ash Davies (drums), and Kevin Bennett (vocals and guitar). As Chris puts it, 'Complete opposite of a PH gig (playing Wurli and organ from a Nord Electro 2 61-key) but both bands totally organic'.

'The funny thing was it was like a time-warp,' wrote Chris – long-resident Down Under – to BtP at the end of the tour. 'This album was at least thirty years after the last Dingoes' album or tour, yet the old and the new numbers gelled. The audience was pretty senior so when I was introduced as being from Procol Harum people said, "How do you like Australia?" as if time had stood still for thrty years.'

'Beyond the Pale' would have alerted fans to this spectacular return of Prof Copping to the performing stage ... had we known about  it. Instead we have pleasure in alerting everyone to the Tracks album itself. Chris plays Hammond on six of the songs. We have to say, it doesn't sound like Procol Harum – but it certainly sounds like Chris Copping!
