Procol Harum, the British band formed in 1967 by Gary Brooker. Their music is characteristically acerbic, rebellious and yet wrapped up in love, peace and social protest. They débuted with A Whiter Shade of Pale, one of the best-selling singles of all time; its use of organ and piano, coupling a blues sensibility with a ballad style, were revolutionary for 1967. After that the group underwent personnel changes, incorporating BJ Wilson on drums and Robin Trower on guitar, with whom Procol recorded a second single, scoring enviable sales with Homburg.

Unlike the experience with these singles, the Procol Harum album (1967) was not well received by the public. The group changed record label and released Shine on Brightly (1968) which also fell short of the sales they hoped for, despite its high artistic quality. A Salty Dog (1969) was a great album, a great concept; and Home (1970) showed a harder edge than their previous work. In 1971 they came out with Broken Barricades, an album which gave substance to the guitar aspirations of Robin Trower, who left the band in that year to pursue a solo career.
