Procol Harum (1967) and A Salty Dog

Two unusual box sets

Per Wadd Hermansen sends us scans of two unusual box sets:

"B
oth boxes are marked  THE ORIGINAL ALBUM - LIMITED EDITION; they were released by Disky Communications Europe B.V. in 1994

"Album 1 is correctly named Procol Harum but includes AWSoP. Inside the box is a standard jewel case version of the album with catalogue number CUCD05
The limited edition box is called CUCD 05 PH

"Album 3 is a replica of A Salty Dog; inside the box is a standard jewel case version of the album with catalogue number CUCD07
The limited edition box is called CUCD 07 PH

"In 1994 I searched for Shine on Brightly and Home in the same series but never found them. I don't know if they were released with the same packaging."

Can anybody help?

Fred Schröter writes to BtP (June 2009)

'I think that I must disappoint Per Wadd Hermansen, for he tried in vain to get the other two albums. They only released these two for quite obvious reasons. The first one because it featured A Whiter Shade of Pale and the second because it featured A Salty Dog. From the other albums no successful single was released and therefore not interesting to release a similar box set from. These boxes were quite inexpensive as they were dumped in cheap record stores.

'A Whiter Shade of Pale was again released 2001 on the EMI Plus label. In fact both releases were the Cube licensed versions of the Procol Harum album. EMI Plus is also a Disky label. Disky and EMI Uden collaborated on a lot of EMI releases during the '90s of the last century. They sometimes issued the same CD, one on the Disky label and another on the EMI Gold label, the latter sounding better than the first one. EMI Gold was the English version of the Disky ones, so there are no Gold editions of any Procol Harum album, for Cube did not license these to EMI in Great Britain at that time.

Hope this is useful

Fred
