Picture Sleeves

From some European singles

These scans were kindly sent to BtP by Yan Friis, whose comments on the variant mix of Rambling On that came in the sleeve pictured below can be found by clicking here.

'My copy of the 45 rpm version of A Salty Dog is a big disappointment,' writes Yan. 'Not just because it is in mono, but because the mix is thin and very, very muddy. Both the group and the orchestra sound as if they are placed at the bottom of a deep funnel. The drums are like distant slaps on cardboard boxes. My God, there's no punch whatsoever, and the beauty of the arrangement is all but drowned. I wonder if this is one of those rush-job singles that the Norwegian record companies sometimes released. Perhaps all the PH variant singles can be explained by their habit of not waiting for the mastertape to arrive, but dubbing their own promo vinyl copies from England instead.'
