Christmas Conundrums 2012

 Schedule of Triumphant Victors

The correct answer this year was '12' ... most people seem to have picked up the supposedly subliminal clues on every page!

1

Carlo 'Jack' Ponissi was first in with the correct answer, just nineteen minutes after midnight. He wins his first-choice prize, and his order of preference was E l h f b k g a d j I c

A hardback book, the recently-published The Ghosts of A Whiter Shade of Pale by Henry Scott Irvine, signed by the author and by longest-standing Procolers, Gary Brooker and Geoff Whitehorn, with a Christmas dedication.

2

Bob Jaccino wins his second choice: his response came in a minute later. His order of preference was e J h b c I f a l k g d

Procol Anglo/Japanese flag Shine on Brightly variant tee-shirt (black, XL) signed by Gary Brooker, Geoff Whitehorn, Matt Pegg, Josh Phillips, Geoff Dunn and Yumi Matsutoya.

3

Pat Keating wins his second choice. His response came in a few minutes after Bob's, with an order of preference
e

Yumi & Procol Harum tour book signed once by Gary Brooker, Geoff Whitehorn, Geoff Dunn, Yumi Matsutoya, and twice by each of Matt Pegg and Josh Phillips. It has very high Procol content over its 36 glossy-full-colour pages; about 50 pictures not counting thumbnails of albums; it's perfect-bound; it contains a discography; it contains an interview with Gary Brooker; it reveals two new and hitherto-unpublished Brooker song-lyrics; it contains photographs from many eras of Procol Harum's existence down the decades. It's a thoroughly desirable Procol souvenir!

4

Arne Grue Jensen wins his second choice with an order of preference l B e i j c f a h k g d A delightful small chunky metal Procol Harum lapel badge, of the very popular ‘lifebelt’ A Salty Dog design originally commissioned by Kellogs. Supplies were thought to have been exhausted but this spanking new specimen – recently found in a drawer in his own studio – was kindly donated by Gary Brooker.

Fashioned from cardboard and plastic, it is decorated with images of the band, and uses a single reed to produce one comically-strident note when blown.

Some comments from competitors – always nice to read something in addition to the blunt response sent by many correspondents: 'I was expecting a last-minute avalanche of mathematical mayhem.  I must say, you have been criminally devious ... you surpassed my direst expectations by a country mile.  You must have trained at some code-breaking academy!' | 'Thanks for the great fun!' | 'Your efforts to amuse and entertain us at Christmas are vastly appreciated.' | 'A fiendishly evil streak runs through you people. Thanks!' | 'Your competitions do take their toll!  But fun.' | 'You have really outdone yourselves this time ... what a merry-go-round you led us through!'

This was the rank order of popularity of the prizes, incidentally: Yumi & PH tour book; The Ghosts of A Whiter Shade of Pale; Yumi & PH tour grey hoodie; Shine on Brightly tee-shirt; white Yumi & PH t-shirt; blue-grey, printed hand-towel; lifebelt badge; pink towel; ‘Rarum’ tee-shirt; black AWSoP 30 badge; white AWSoP 30 badge; Procol ‘vuvuzela’.

If the contestants will now send their 'real world' addresses (please don't rely on the supposition that we have kept them from last time you won)  we shall set about posting the spoils out to them.

Thanks to everybody who took part, and commiserations to those whose correct answers did not earn them a prize on this occasion, because of the vagaries of the BtP Homburg. Thanks also, of course, to the donors whose generosity allows us to present such delectable prizes.

Congratulations once again to Marvin Chassman, in the USA, whose improbable run of skill and luck continues ... he's been a winner every year since we started running Yuletide puzzles in 1997!

And finally, many thanks to this year's Glamorous Assistant, shown (right) on the job
