Willie and the Poor Boys

Ooooooh Yeahh!

A 'must have' for those of us that that were Paramounts fans and those who particularly enjoy Gary's R&B Band No Stiletto Shoes is a CD that's still widely available in larger record shops: NEM CD 689 Sequel Records features a concert by Bill Wyman's Willie and the Poor Boys which was recorded live for Swedish Radio on July 31st 1992.

Line up is Bill, Gary, Andy Fairweather-Low, Graham Broad and Terry Taylor with Jimmy Henderson on vocals and harmonica; lead vocal honours are mostly taken by Gary, who sings on High School Confidential, Ooh Poo Pah Doo, Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie

Woogie 'Flu', Looking for Someone to Love, Stagger Lee, Lovin' up a Storm, What'd I Say and Land of 1,000 Dances. If you've never heard Gary playing rolling New Orleans and R&R piano you're in for a real treat.

Produced by Bill Wyman, the sound quality and balance is particularly excellent for a live recording. Gary's singing is sublime (the intro to Ooh Poo Pah Doo sends a shiver down the spine!). I may be prejudiced (well just a bit) but it would have been even better if he'd been singing on every track.

If you haven't got a copy – get one!

By the way, it looks as if Gary might be touring again with Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings in October. More on this next issue, hopefully. DR
