October 8: Happy Birthday Ray Royer (1945) : 'Beyond the Pale' is nine years old today!

We are pleased to be able to commemorate this ninth birthday of 'Beyond the Pale' with a restored picture of  Barrie James Wilson (18 March 1947 – 8 October 1990) (thanks, Wilson and Daizy).

Gary Brooker made the following tribute to BJ while introducing The Palers' Band at The Palers' Revels in Lejre, Denmark, on 19 August after Procol's first symphonic concert. In the heat of the moment GB had been speaking French, with simultaneous translation by Roland; then he reverted to English ...

Gary Brooker
I will actually change back into Danish now ... but from what I've heard of the latest Palers' musical renditions, on CD, they've been absolutely excellent: in fact some of Procol Harum get more work from the Palers than they do from the actual band.

The picture restoredGeoff Whitehorn
Just in case I needed another gig!

Gary Brooker
Anyway I'd like us to raise our glasses ... we probably don't have them ... but there's somebody that I know everybody here would have absolutely loved, and he would have spoken and loved every one of you here tonight, and that's Mr BJ Wilson (cheers). His spirit lives on ... he was the best drummer that there's ever been ... apart from ... (laughter among PH bandmates). It's just that I saw him on a Danish TV show this morning, from 1974, and it just reminded me what a great guy he was, that's all, and it just came to me at that moment.

So we can have a good night for him, 'cos he would have been straight in front, head man at this party.  Good luck for the evening, have a good time!

We're also happy to announce a new product in the BtP shop, the Whaling Stories decorative patch that depicts BJ Wilson in 'Hero' mode. This attractive product was created by Michael Ackermann for the [now-suspended] Whaling Stories Fan Club in Germany; his stock is now available online for the first time (thanks, Michael). Click here to view!

We have commemorated the 8 October anniversary with the following pieces in recent years:

2005: BJ Wilson on the drums, player of the month.
2004: a percussionist's analysis of BJ's instruments down the years
2003: close encounter with a great percussionist
2002: the Melody Maker
profile of BJ
2001: a
BtP interview with one of BJ's Joe Cocker band-mates
