Robin Trower at De Vereeniging, Nijmegen, The Netherlands

28 February 2009 • Frans Steensma reports

Jack Bruce (vocals, bass)
Robin Trower (guitar)
Gary Husband (drums)

(Short introduction by JB: ‘Great vibe, I feel a great vibe,  it’s wonderful to be here, for me it’s wonderful to be here at all …)

Seven Moons

from Seven Moons

Sound balance not optimal yet, volume too low

Lives Of Clay

from Seven Moons

Superb vocal performance by JB, great pulsating riffs

Distant Places Of The Heart

from Seven Moons

Slow talking blues, real bluesy solo by RT

Sunshine Of Your Love

from Disraeli Gears

First Cream classic, long version, one of the greatest bass lines in rock history, RT solo no Clapton rip-off, GH working real hard to make us forget Baker, first highlight, also first time JB doesn’t have to look at the lyric sheets in front of him… JB: ‘Now we really getting somewhere!’

Carmen

from B.L.T.

The only one this evening from 1981, JB’s favorite – he also chose this track for his 6CD compilation – RT started with beautiful long sustain note different from the lp version, lovely ending

She’s Not The One (twice)

from Seven Moons

Time for a short rocker, stopped in the middle – JB: ‘She’s Not That One’ – , second try, great solo ending by RT

We’re Going Wrong

from Disraeli Gears

Second Cream song, long version, a real test for JB’s vocals – high notes – another tough one for GH – different drumsticks – one of the best RT solos of the evening; JB, with lots of respect: ‘Robin Trower on the guitar!’, RT ends with a couple of Spoonful notes

Perfect Place

from Seven Moons

False start, stopped after a few seconds, JB’s fault – ‘Sorry Robin, sometimes I feel like a tourist here’ – up till now the trio had followed the order of songs on the album, probably the reason of JB’s mistake

Just Another Day

from Seven Moons

Emotional singing, one of JB’s best performances, especially the different ways he repeats many times the line 'Is it real life', intricate interplay between JB and RT, second highlight

Perfect Place

from Seven Moons

Second try, RT’s anti-drug song, nice wah-wah solo by RT

Bad Case Of Celebrity

from Seven Moons

Another change in order of songs and another slow blues, excellent vocal by JB

The Last Door

from Seven Moons

GH + RT open together, best up-tempo song of the evening, GH excels

Come To Me

from Seven Moons

Great battle between JB & RT, very subtle finish by RT

I’m Home

from Seven Moons

Starts out as a solo number for JB, emotional talking blues

White Room

from Wheels of Fire

Third Cream song, second Cream classic, straight from I’m Home into White Room, different beginning compared to EC’s live version, GH at his best, RT ends with an earth shattering solo, third highlight.

Encore

JB: ‘Remember this is only our third-ever concert!’

Politician

from Wheels Of Fire

Fourth Cream song, another great riff, EC would be proud if he heard this BTH version, fourth highlight

JB: ‘Now we’re going to do all the same songs backwards’

Seven Moons

from Seven Moons

Second time, louder, more determined, better sound balance

Lives Of Clay

from Seven Moons

Second time, false start, louder, more determined, better sound balance

Distant Places Of The Heart

from Seven Moons

Second time, louder, more determined, better sound balance

Have we seen in February the best classic rock concert of 2009? See for yourself coming August when the DVD will be released.

Thanks, Frans!
