Procul [sic] Harum in Sweden : the first reviews

Jonas Söderström, for BtP

Procol Harum played for the first time in Sweden - the first time in Scandinavia, in fact - in Gothenburg, 28 August 1967.

In the summer of 2000 I went through the files of the two biggest newspaper in Sweden: the morning paper Dagens Nyheter (Daily News) and the evening paper Expressen (The Express). Among the articles from 1967 I managed to retrieve from the files were what I, at least for now, think are the earliest-known complete reviews of a Procol Harum concert.

The greatest surprise, though, was not the articles, but what happened in the archive... but more about that below ...

Procul Harum in Sweden : the first reviews

1

Anticipating the first Procol show in Sweden (when they did not, contrary to common belief, share the bill with Benny Andersson's Hep Stars): an unusual band-portrait, and brief interviews with Brooker and Reid; and the word 'suddenly' four times (thanks, Jonas!)

2

The reviews ... not only of 'our boys' and their eel-tight trousers, but also of 'leathery and unimaginative cacophony' and of a self-styled fakir nailing his tongue to a board.

3

Another article: about 'the pop world's most quiet bringers of happiness'

4

The Daily News was still not pleased... 'One would like to hear the original melodies … being played by other, more skilful musicians.'

5

A picture with a caption, and a delightful conclusion from Jonas!
