January 26:

With great regret we announce the passing, on 24 January 2010 at the University Hospital, Regensburg, of
Ethan Reilly
, charitable musician, BtP reviewer and immaculate Palers' Project contributor.

All are invited to the farewell ceremony at the Dreifaltigkeitsberg cemetery in Regensburg on 29 January at 2.15 pm:
Am Dreifaltigkeitsberg 22, 93059 Regensburg. Click for location.

Read a Procol Harum review by Ethan; a fascinating page about his 'tuneful crustaceans'; and visit him at The Palers' Project

Sail on, Ethan!

Added the first pieces of reader feedback to our page of Dave Ball's contribution about 1971 Procol dates. Please keep it coming!

Updated other Procol tour pages here, here, here, here (thanks, Billy from Philly)

January 25:

'Beyond the Pale' relies greatly – indeed is largely based on – feedback and facts from Procol-minded people who write in. Four points arising in the course of the last 24 hours, therefore!

1. Regarding yesterday's item, about the statistics relating to countries from which BtP is visited: yes, the counter is still on the 'What's New' page ... scroll down and have a look at it! (If the numbers look different, that's because it's 24 hours since we made the table). You can read a previous announcement, heralding this counter exactly one year ago,

2. Good point: we've added a table to that page showing the 'rank order' of countries according to their absolute scores (obviously, this gives a very different order from the original table showing the scores relative to the countries' populations).

3. To our Canadian friends ... sorry, we referred to the upcoming Procol Harum dates as being 'in the USA' though we do know very well that Toronto is not in America. A question of judgment decided in haste ... the dates had just been confirmed and we were rushing to get the news out (thank you, Martin)

4  Added about 20 American (and Canadian!) Procol Harum dates ... feedback welcome! (thanks, Dave)

January 24:

Denmark, Norway, Jersey, UK, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, Netherlands, Oman, Ireland, Austria, Cook Islands, Germany, America ...

Why are these territories ranked in this order, and why are we publishing such a list today?

Added an explanation here

January 23:

Added six concert dates – here, here, here, here, here and here – for Procol Harum in the summer (thanks, Chris)

We understand that the confirmation of these dates means that Procol's planned recording has been moved to later in the year

January 22:

Added news of an interesting upcoming gig featuring a popular Procoler (thanks, Henry)

January 21: RIP Ed Thigpen

Added another in BtP's 'Also' series in which Procol fans recommend other music they enjoy, revealing sometimes surprising links to the Harum world (thanks, Fred)

Updated Jupp links here  (thanks, Lars)

January 20:

Added a page depicting the 2007 Brooker and Reid: Procol Rarum tee-shirt ... more Procol Harum tee-shirt snaps are welcome, of course: click here

January 19: RIP Kate McGarrigle

Added a page depicting the 2006 Ledreborg crew tee-shirt ... more Procol Harum tee-shirt snaps are welcome, of course: click here

January 18:

Added the words of a hitherto-missing Brooker/Reid song

January 17:

'Two great albums then, which should be hastily added to any self-respecting fan of the era’s collection.'

Added a review of the second pair of Salvo Procol re-issues

January 16:

'Mabel and ’Twas Teatime ... seemed very out of place in the order of the album ... they did disappoint me and a lot of Procol fans ...'

Added a personal review of Something Magic in the Salvo reissue series (thanks, Fred)

January 15:

Added a personal review of Something Magic – to a 1977 concert-review by the same author (thanks, Alfred)

January 14: RIP Teddy Pendergrass

'Brooker, as a tunesmith, brilliantly realised the often difficult task of setting Keith Reid’s idiosyncratic lyrical barbs to memorable music'

Added a review of the first couple of Salvo Procol re-issues

January 13:

Added a Procol Harum ticket here, and a useful setlist addendum here  (thanks, Jim)

Added a brief festival review, under a fairly loathsome poster  (thanks, Andreas)

January 12:

Added a photo-report about Gary Brooker's sideman appearance at the start of the year (thanks, Paul)

Visit YouTube for a glimpse of Bill Eyden in action ... though not, of course, on A Whiter Shade of Pale

January 11: RIP Mick Green (BtP picture)

Can I go back to the past a little bit?
Sure.
Is it okay with you?
Yeah, of course.
You had a long relationship with Gary Brooker ...

Added a good-length Robin Trower interview (thanks, Bradshaw)

January 10: RIP Tony Clarke

For the growing numbers of Procoloid converts to Bristol's Phantom Limb: listen to this radio show, scrolling to 2:14:00 for a great song and some farsighted comments

January 6:

This year's memorable BtP Competition is now closed, and we publish the solution. Winners' names will follow.

As the UK suffers its worst and most prolonged cold weather for a generation, Procol Harum were obliged to cancelled today's studio session: '... we were all snowed in ...' (thanks, Chris)

January 5:

Added the eighth instalment in this Winterval's Procol puzzles, and watch out for bonus tracks!
